When reading pages 23-84 of Night by Elie Wiesel, a lot of strong emotions were evoked. This part of the book is a roller coaster emotionally. I am happy that Elie and his dad survive, but so sad that the other Jewish people die. “Then the entire camp, block after block, filed past the hanged boy and stared at his extinguished eyes, the tongue hanging from his gaping mouth. The Kapos forced everyone to look him squarely in the face. Afterward, we were given permission to go back to our block and have our meal. I remember that on that evening, the soup tasted better than ever. . . .” (Wiesel 62). The reason that Elie says the soup tastes good is because he is thankful. He is thankful that he is alive because he could be dead.

Although Elie was thankful to be alive, he and many other Jews started losing faith in God due to the death and torture they witnessed. The reason they lost faith in God is because they could not comprehend God letting this happen to them. "God is testing us. He wants to see whether we are capable of overcoming our base instincts, of killing the Satan within ourselves.”(Wiesel 45). Saying that God was testing them was one of the only ways the Jews were able to keep their faith. You must have a strong will to be able to maintain your faith during a time like this. ”For God's sake, where is God?wnd from within me, I heard a voice answer: "Where He is? This is where—hanging here from this gallows. . . .”(Wiesel 65). Elie says that God is in a concentration camp hanging from the gallows. He says this because there is no way God would let this happen. God would not simply sit back and watch all of these people die.

  1. David,
You had a lot of good points on the emotions you went through while reading Night. I would however id you are going to do a paragraph dedicated to emotions elaborate on the characters emotions as well. Your use of quotes was quite good, the quote to writing ratio was a bit uneven though. Overall really good writing mechanics.

  2. David,
I liked how you chose the theme of losing faith. Your analysis on this topic was very interesting to read. You could have been a little more specific about which emotions these chapters evoked for you, and a little bit more about the metaphor of God hanging from the gallows would have been nice. Overall though, I enjoyed reading your post!
