I thought that as a reader of Night, it is a very sad and interesting book. It is sad because it is about Nazi, Germany and how he survived and his suffering from the very start of the book. I thought it was interesting and surprising because of how optimistic all the Jews were. The first sight of their optimism is when they expelled all foreigners from the Sighet;
And then one day all foreign Jews were expelled from the Sighet...The deportees were quickly forgotten. A few days after they left, it was rumored that they were in Glacia, working, and even that they were content with their fate. Days went by, Then weeks and months. Life was normal again. (pg. 6)
When he lost his friend he soon regained his optimism. Later the Jews were marked with the ‘yellow star’ setting them apart as the others,
“Three days later, a new decree: every Jew had to wear the yellow star.” (11)
I thought this in particular was a very powerful message because The Germans were saying by this that the Jews are not what you are they are something else, something different.
Some days later after their father had gotten the news that the Germans will be transporting the Jews to an unknown area they were still hopeful even then until their last minute there;
Time went by quickly. It was already four o'clock in the morning. My father was running right and left, exhausted, consoling friends, checking with the Jewish Council just in case the order had been rescinded. To the last moment, people clung to hope.” (15)
“To the last moment people clung to hope (15)
This was very sad because the Germans were making the Jews leave their homes with only a backpack, some food, and some clothing. And after living on that they will be treated very poorly
I noticed that the author sometimes wrote in a poetic (and powerful) way, like in the intro he said,
“Foreign Journalists frequently come to see me. I am wary of them, torn as I am between my desire to speak to them freely and the fear of putting weapons into the hands of interviewers whose attitude toward France I do not know.”
This is poetic because it rhymed a bit and it felt like as if it could become a poem. I think the author chose to write this passage and part of the book like this because it captures the readers attention, and to me at least, that makes me want to read more and see why he would choose to write like this in particular right now. This is a powerful way of writing because he had a powerful and meaningful conversation with a Jew About their life and Elie Wiesel’s life as a survivor. Elie Wiesel said that he is careful telling people about what he learned about Nazi, Germany as a survivor because of their attitude about France. I think that he felt trust in this Jew since he might have faced what he had at the same time and that is why he put such a powerful message in such a poetic way.
ReplyDeleteMiranda,
I was thinking the same thing about the Jews being optimistic and a bit delusional until they saw the danger themselves. I think you could re-word the part that says "I think it's poetic because..." but other than that, this post is very strong😊

You gave great explinations of your quotes, but it would support your paper more if you had a clearer emotional response.
